Are we teaching in the home?

When was the last time you had a Bible study with your children at your house?

Deuteronomy 6.4 reads “Hear O, Israel:  The LORD our God is one LORD.”  This verse is the core of Jewish/Christian faith, and is simply referred to, by Jews, as the Shema.  The Jews in Jesus’ day, and even today, recite this verse when they rise up and when they lay down.  In this section of the book of Deuteronomy, the core of the Jewish and ultimately Christian faith, we find another interesting passage – Deuteronomy 6.7, which reads, “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

Thou?

Who are thou?

Parents.

Shalt teach them diligently?

What is “them?”

The commandments of God, the Shema, and the 613 rules by which the Jews lived.

Shall teach the commandments of God to whom?

Their children.
What is teaching them diligently?

The word has the idea of to sharpen.  If we were going to sharpen a knife would we run our sharpener over it one time?  Of course not.  We could continually run it over our knife to ensure that it was sharp.

When we talk, sit, walk, lie down, and rise up?  That sounds like a way of saying all the time!

The same principle is true for our children.  If we want our children to follow God, we have to teach them diligently.  We have to continually sit down, like God has commanded us, and read the Bible with them.  We must daily sharpen our own children.  It is not the responsibility of the preacher, the youth minister, or a Sunday school teacher, but of the parents to teach the children how to behave and follow God.  As a matter of fact, the first 9 chapters of the book of Proverbs paints a beautiful of both the father and mother teaching their son the way of truth.

So, when was the last time you had a Bible study with your children at your house?
