Agree in the Lord?
In Philippians 4.2 Paul writes, “I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.” This verse may at first seem odd and out of place to us. Why would Paul take time, in an inspired letter, to call out two sisters in Christ and encourage them to get along with each other? What does that have to do with living a life for Christ? The answer is everything. Here Paul, while in prison, writes and entreats these two ladies to agree, or as some translations say, “Be of the same mind.” Paul believes that being of the same mind is crucial to living the Christian life. He knows that their argument has affected the church in Philippi in an adverse way. It has even affected him rotting away in a jail cell, possibly hundreds of miles away. This is a great example of how our lives influence others. Do you think that Euodia and Syntyche believed that their dispute would make it back to Paul, and furthermore, make it into the Word of God to stay forever? What we need to realize is that we have no way of knowing what will happen due to our gossip. We have no way to fathom how far reaching the affect will be on us, our relationships, and even on the Lord’s church. This week as we strive to live for Jesus, let’s remember Euodia and Syntyche. When someone attempts to gossip and tell us about someone else – let’s say, “I don’t care.” When someone tries to generate stiff with us – let’s say, “I love you.” And when we are tempted ourselves to do these things – let’s remember Paul and that he, even hundreds of miles away in prison, was affected by these two ladies.
